Eleven ordinances traced through three scriptural witnesses — and into the modern House of the Lord.
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established… and all nations shall flow unto it."
Isaiah 2:2Isaías 2:2
Each scroll opens on its own when you tap it. Cada pergaminho abre-se ao tocá-lo.
The ordinances of the temple are not innovations of the Restoration. They are restorations — patterns inscribed in Eden, codified at Sinai, fulfilled at Golgotha, witnessed at Bountiful, and rebuilt in our day from Kirtland to the ends of the earth. Read in column, each ordinance becomes a single thread woven through millennia.
The pages that follow place three witnesses side by side. The Old Testament establishes the type. The New Testament reveals the fulfilment. The Book of Mormon stands as a third witness — independent, hemispheric, often surprisingly explicit where the Bible is only suggestive. Beneath the three columns sits the connection to the modern House of the Lord, where these patterns now live as ordinance.
This is a reading aid, not a manual. Bring your scriptures.
O Velho Testamento estabelece o tipo. O Novo Testamento revela o cumprimento.
The altar before the temple. Every other ordinance presupposes this one. O altar antes do templo. Todas as outras ordenanças pressupõem esta.
"He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities… and with his stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53:5Isaías 53:5
Abel's firstling, Abraham's ram caught in the thicket, the Passover lamb whose blood marks the lintel, the goat sent into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement — the whole Mosaic system is a year-long sermon on substitution.
"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29João 1:29
What Israel rehearsed for fifteen centuries, Christ accomplishes once. Hebrews names him the High Priest who enters the holiest place not with the blood of bulls but with his own, and so the veil is rent.
"And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood… ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit."
Lehi builds an altar in the wilderness within days of leaving Jerusalem. Six centuries later, the resurrected Christ stands at Bountiful and ends blood sacrifice in a single sentence — the ordinance does not cease but is interiorised.
Water that consecrates, oil that crowns. The body made fit for sacred service. Água que consagra, azeite que coroa. O corpo tornado apto para o serviço sagrado.
"And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office." Exodus 28:41Êxodo 28:41
Aaron is brought to the door of the tabernacle, washed with water, clothed, and anointed with oil from head downward. The pattern is fixed: cleansing precedes consecration; consecration precedes service. Arão é levado à porta do tabernáculo, lavado com água, vestido e ungido com azeite desde a cabeça. O padrão é fixo: a purificação precede a consagração; a consagração precede o serviço.
"God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power." Acts 10:38Atos 10:38
The Christ is the Anointed One — the title is the ordinance. At Bethany a woman pours spikenard on his head; he calls it his anointing for burial. The Spirit, John writes, is now the anointing his disciples have received. O Cristo é o Ungido — o título é a ordenança.
"I have been chosen by this people, and consecrated by my father, and was suffered by the hand of the Lord that I should be a ruler and a king over this people." Mosiah 2:11Mosias 2:11
Nephite kings are consecrated; priests are consecrated by Nephi, by Alma, and by Christ himself in 3 Nephi 11. Alma 13 reaches further back, describing high priests "ordained" and "sanctified" from the foundation of the world.
From the coats of skins in Eden to the robes washed white in the blood of the Lamb.
"Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them." Genesis 3:21Génesis 3:21
The first ordinance after the Fall is a clothing. The priest of the tabernacle wears a precisely-specified linen — breastplate, ephod, robe, sash, headdress — each piece a sermon. Zechariah's vision strips Joshua of his filthy garment and clothes him in pure raiment as priest.
"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." Galatians 3:27Gálatas 3:27
Christ's tunic is seamless — woven from the top throughout — the very specification of the high-priestly robe. John on Patmos sees the multitude in white "which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes." Clothing is now the visible name of a covenant people.
"There can no man be saved except his garments are washed white; yea, his garments must be purified until they are cleansed from all stain, through the blood of him… the Lamb of God." Alma 5:21Alma 5:21
Nephi is shown the apostles in white robes; Alma preaches it as a moral diagnostic — are your garments clean? In Ether the redeemed of the New Jerusalem are described as those "whose garments are white through the blood of the Lamb."
When God binds himself to a people, he changes their name. The name is the covenant made portable.
"Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed." Genesis 32:28Génesis 32:28
Abram becomes Abraham, Sarai becomes Sarah, Jacob wrestles all night and is renamed Israel. Each new name is the seal of a new covenant. Jeremiah promises a coming day when the covenant itself will be written inwardly.
"To him that overcometh will I give… a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." Revelation 2:17Apocalipse 2:17
The disciples are called Christians first at Antioch — a covenant marked by a name. Baptism is "into the name." John on Patmos hears Christ promise both a new name and the writing of God's name on the faithful.
"There shall be no other name given… whereby salvation cometh; therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, all you that have entered into the covenant with God." Mosiah 5:8Mosias 5:8
King Benjamin's discourse is perhaps the most explicit name-covenant in scripture. The people enter the covenant and receive a name by which they will be known forever — a ritual the modern temple-goer recognises immediately.
The grave and the womb in one motion. Buried with him, raised with him.
"Then I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness… will I cleanse you." Ezekiel 36:25Ezequiel 36:25
Israel passes through the Red Sea as Noah's house passed through the flood. Naaman dips seven times in Jordan and his flesh comes again "like the flesh of a little child." Solomon's molten sea — a vast basin on twelve oxen — stands at the temple as a baptism for the priests.
"Buried with him in baptism… that like as Christ was raised up from the dead… even so we also should walk in newness of life." Romans 6:4Romanos 6:4
Christ himself descends into Jordan to fulfil all righteousness; the heavens open. Peter draws the line straight from the flood: the ark "saved" eight souls by water, "the like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us."
"Having authority given me of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen."
Christ at Bountiful dictates the ordinance with surgical precision — exact words, exact mode, exact authority. Alma at the Waters of Mormon shows the heart of it six centuries earlier. Moroni's letter on infant baptism is among the most theologically dense pages in scripture.
Bread on the showbread table, lamb on the Passover plate, body and blood on the table of the Lord.
"Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God." Genesis 14:18Génesis 14:18
Bread and wine appear in the priesthood's very first appearance. Twelve loaves of showbread stand perpetually before the Lord in the holy place. Moses and seventy elders ascend Sinai, see God, and eat and drink in his presence.
"This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me… This cup is the new testament in my blood." Luke 22:19–20Lucas 22:19–20
The Passover meal becomes the Lord's Supper in a single transformative evening. On the Emmaus road the risen Christ is known "in the breaking of bread." Paul transmits the exact words "received of the Lord" — the earliest written sacramental liturgy.
"This shall ye always observe to do, even as I have done… and it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me."
Christ administers the Sacrament twice at Bountiful, and Moroni preserves the prayers word for word — making the Book of Mormon the only canonical text containing the sacramental liturgy verbatim. The bread is broken, blessed, and given before any sermon.
Authority transmitted by hand, never by ambition. The lineage is the ordinance. Autoridade transmitida pela mão, nunca pela ambição. A linhagem é a ordenança.
"Take Joshua… in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him… and put some of thine honour upon him." Numbers 27:18–20Números 27:18–20
Aaron is ordained by Moses, Joshua by Moses, the Levites by Aaron, Elisha by Elijah's mantle. Authority is never seized; it is laid on, passed forward, traceable. Melchizedek already holds it in the days of Abraham.
"No man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron." Hebrews 5:4Hebreus 5:4
Christ is "made an high priest after the order of Melchisedec" — Hebrews 7 makes the case at length. He ordains the Twelve, the Seventy follow, the Apostles ordain Stephen and the Seven by laying on of hands, and the chain extends.
"They were called after this holy order, and were sanctified, and their garments were washed white through the blood of the Lamb." Alma 13:11Alma 13:11
Alma 13 is among scripture's clearest accounts of the Melchizedek Priesthood — "after the order of the Son of God." Christ ordains the twelve disciples at Bountiful by laying on of hands; Moroni 3 records the ordination prayer for priests and teachers verbatim.
The architecture of every temple is built around a single threshold — and the One who passes through it.
"And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet… with cherubims shall it be made: and… the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy." Exodus 26:31, 33Êxodo 26:31, 33
The veil is the dramatic centre of every Israelite sanctuary. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest enters alone, with blood, with incense, with trembling. Isaiah and Ezekiel both pass through it in vision and live to write the account.
"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh." Hebrews 10:19–20Hebreus 10:19–20
At the moment of Christ's death the temple veil tears top to bottom. Hebrews then makes the breathtaking identification: the veil is his flesh. To pass through is to pass through him. John on Patmos walks through the open door of heaven.
"This same Jesus showed himself unto him… and never were greater things made manifest than those which were made manifest unto the brother of Jared." Ether 3:20; 4:4Éter 3:20; 4:4
The Brother of Jared passes through the veil in Ether 3 — one of the most explicit theophanies in any scripture. Lehi sees the throne of God. At Bountiful, the Father's voice introduces the Son, and the multitude touches his wounded hands and feet — the veil dropped entirely.
A gift from on high — not knowledge alone but power. Heaven descends and clothes the saints.
"The cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord."
Sinai is the prototype: Israel washes, sanctifies, ascends; Moses passes through cloud and fire and his face shines. Solomon's dedication of the temple ends not with men finishing but with the Lord arriving — glory so heavy the priests cannot stand.
"Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." Luke 24:49Lucas 24:49
On the Mount of Transfiguration Peter, James, and John see Christ's face shine "as the sun" — a Sinai in miniature. Pentecost is the corporate fulfilment: tongues of fire rest on each disciple. The Greek behind "endued" is the same root as endowment.
"And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus."
3 Nephi 17 records the multitude encircled by fire, with angels descending to minister to the little ones. 3 Nephi 19 records the disciples praying until their faces and garments shine as Christ's own — a Pentecost in the western hemisphere, but more explicit.
What is bound on earth is bound in heaven. The covenant outlasts the grave. O convénio ultrapassa a sepultura.
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet… and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers." Malachi 4:5–6Malaquias 4:5–6
Genesis ends Eden with a marriage; the Abrahamic covenant is given to a man, his wife, and his seed "in their generations" — a binding that crosses time. The very last words of the Old Testament point forward to Elijah and the welding of generations.
"Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:19Mateus 16:19
Christ gives the keys of binding to Peter. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Elijah himself appears — the same figure Malachi promised. Paul calls marriage "a great mystery" pointing to Christ and his Church. Revelation portrays the sealing of God's servants in their foreheads. Cristo dá as chaves do selamento a Pedro.
"Whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Helaman 10:7Helamã 10:7
The Book of Mormon explicitly preserves the sealing keys — given to Nephi son of Helaman in identical language to Peter's. The Lehite saga is itself a sealing-record: a covenant family carried by name through nearly a thousand years. Christ quotes Malachi verbatim to the Nephites.
The gospel preached to those in prison. The keys of the kingdom carried into the grave and back.
"To proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound." Isaiah 61:1Isaías 61:1
Isaiah repeatedly foresees prisoners gathered, brought up out of a pit, set free. Malachi's promise of Elijah implies a work between fathers and children spanning the veil. Obadiah ends his book with "saviours… on mount Zion" — a strange and suggestive phrase.
"Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"
Christ in the tomb does not rest. Peter writes that he "went and preached unto the spirits in prison… for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead." Paul's single, dazzling reference in 1 Corinthians assumes a baptismal practice for the dead familiar enough not to need explaining.
"He hath delivered his saints… from that awful monster the devil, and death, and hell, and that lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment."
The Book of Mormon's witness here is largely doctrinal rather than liturgical — the necessity of the resurrection (2 Ne 9), the state of the spirit between death and resurrection (Alma 40), the universality of redemption (Helaman 14). Christ at Bountiful quotes Malachi 4 in full, including the welding of fathers and children.
Eleven themes, three witnesses, one liturgy. Read them in column and the temple ordinances are not a nineteenth-century innovation but a recovery — patterns set in Eden, codified at Sinai, fulfilled at Golgotha, witnessed at Bountiful, and now performed in two hundred operating temples across the earth.
Of all the questions the modern temple-goer might bring, perhaps the most honest is this: not where did this come from? but how did so much of it survive at all?
"The temple is the great symbol of our membership… It is the holiest place on the face of the earth."
Gordon B. Hinckley
